Know Your Media

Updated: Apr 9, 2019

You would not put a 30 second television ad on a static billboard. You would not put a radio script in the newspaper. So why are you using a "one-size-fits-all" approach when it comes to your social media platforms?

Why are there poorly cropped Instagram stories in your Instagram feed? Why are there Instagram handles in your Facebook descriptions? Or copy and paste descriptions from your Facebook or otherwise, with URLs leading to nowhere in your Instagram captions?

Just as we did once with television and radio, it is important to consider each platform's strengths and weaknesses. Facebook? Instagram? YouTube? Each of them have their advantages and disadvantages. Each of them have their own sets of guidelines and templates when it comes to posting content. Just as audio is best suited for radio than for a newspaper, an image optimized for one social media platform may not be the best version of itself for another.

Would you put a 30 second television ad in the newspaper?

Which is the best platform or app for the message you are trying to send? Is your primary target audience on the platform you are using? Facebook seems to have an increasingly older crowd, while Instagram seems to have captured the hearts of the younger audience. Video content is becoming increasingly popular across the platforms, although whether it should be landscape or vertical formatting has been up for debate. Going LIVE is also increasing in popularity but what to say and on which platform?

And which of these will be the best format to portray your product? Which is the best for the message you are trying to send?

Quite understandably, it can be overwhelming. As you gain a basic understanding of one app, another app or a new feature launches and it seems impossible to keep up.
